“According to some estimates, closing the gender gap in access to land and other productive assets could increase agricultural outputs by up to 20% in Africa(1).”
What do you know about the Third World? Have you ever seen any predicaments that communities in developing countries are in face-to-face?
Poverty is a human being concocted illness of this planet. Our changing climate exacerbates it with the shrinking of available resources for rural areas to thrive—less water and agricultural lands are accessible globe-wide.
It is outright resoundingly unfair that these adverse developments are affecting the most undeveloped countries disproportionally.
On top of that, gender inequality is tangibly holding back economic growth for these countries. Due to local customs and traditions, women are less able to access the means, tools, inventions, markets or even the information to run their farms. This predicament is especially true in rural areas(2).
Rural women carry their household duties alone, and on average raise around four kids. If there is a sick person in the family, it is most likely the wives, daughters, or female relatives who look after the person in need of care; moreover, fulfilling their duties without any financial compensation.
What’s more, if women are lucky enough to overcome these discriminatory obstacles, their crops are sold at lower prices than their male counterparts!
If you believe in equality and what to help eradicate extreme poverty, give access to farming to rural women do something today:
- Initiate conversations about the importance of women participating in the development of Third World countries. What do you think should be done to sustainably support these hard-working women to overcome all pressing issues around them?
- Work towards the SDGs (like Sustainably Consumption and Production, Gender Equality or No Poverty) by volunteering at aiesec.org.
- Sponsor and encourage someone near you, such as a cousin, child, niece, or nephew to act upon the Global Goals by volunteering abroad at aiesec.org.
- Find an AIESEC entity, present all over the world, and collaborate with advice and financial support.
