SDG 11 | World Without Waste, is it just a dream of a few?
Aka 2020 Cleanup day in Brussels-Schaerbeek by AIESEC Alumni World Cleanup Day is an annual event where individuals gather every September for one day all over the globe to pick up trash and get rid of unwanted waste in public places. Last year this one-day-event united around 20 million people in 180 countries. In 2020, we all wonder how the pandemic impacted this great movement. I asked Jan Peeters, from the board of AIESEC Alumni in Belgium to let us know more about the organiser’s perspective. ——————–

October 16: World Food Day
How is your relationship with food? Do you have access to clean, healthy, nutritious food? Alternatively, maybe you know someone with eating disorders; or someone who struggles to provide food for his/her family every day preventing them from doing well at work/school? There are too many people in this world without even one nutritious meal per day. How is humankind’s relationship with food consumption? Please take your time to search for more information and consider these selected facts: “821 million people in the world still suffer from hunger even though the world produces enough food to feed everyone. 60% of them are women(1)” “45% of infant…

October 15: International Day of Rural Women
“According to some estimates, closing the gender gap in access to land and other productive assets could increase agricultural outputs by up to 20% in Africa(1).” What do you know about the Third World? Have you ever seen any predicaments that communities in developing countries are in face-to-face? Poverty is a human being concocted illness of this planet. Our changing climate exacerbates it with the shrinking of available resources for rural areas to thrive—less water and agricultural lands are accessible globe-wide. It is outright resoundingly unfair that these adverse developments are affecting the most undeveloped countries disproportionally. On top of that, gender inequality is tangibly holding…

Sustainability and Digital Tourism During COVID-19 part 2
AKA a Collaborative Project of a Handful of Alumni From Africa and Europe For more information on #2MorrowDigitalTrips, please visit: Bit.ly/2MorrowTripChannel or read part 1 of this article. What can we do together through our project #2MorrowDigitalTrips for the Sustainable Development Goals? Improve Mental Health – SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing “Previous research has revealed a profound and broad spectrum of psychological impact that outbreaks can inflict on people. Among the general public at the individual level, it can precipitate new psychiatric symptoms in people without mental illness, aggravate the condition of those with pre-existing mental illness and cause distress to the caregivers of affected individuals (2).”…

October 5th: International World Habitat Day
In 1985, the United Nations designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on issues regarding our living environments. Also, on World Habitat Day we shall be reminded that adequate shelter is a fundamental human right for all of us. On another note, humankind has historically struggled to sustain waste-wise municipalities all around the globe. Recently, though, this theme has attracted increasing attention, not just in developed countries. Our civilisations must address the grim fact that they produce record-high levels of waste every day. It is tragic that today’s modern life produces so much waste. If you would like to know more about waste…

Sustainability and Digital Tourism During COVID-19 part 1
AKA a Collaborative Project of a Handful of Alumni From Africa and Europe It seems that nearly all of humanity in this new decade works, shops, studies, exercises, attends conferences and visits religious gatherings without stepping out of their homes. Just a few mentions on how our entire world slipped on Covid – as if on a sneaky banana skin – by the end of 2019, and fell upside down on its back in the new year of 2020. More than ever before, we are heavily dependent on digital solutions, which became the only escape from lockups. Heavy limits were instantly placed on every aspect of our lives,…

Sustainable Cities Around the Globe
Have you ever thought about the quality of life in your city and how sustainable it is? Is your public transportation working well, or is it a nightmare to use? Or, is there no alternative to taking your car and endless traffic queues? Are there enough green spaces saving you from suffocating on smog that allow you to slow down? Can you still afford your apartment or house within the city limits? Let us have a closer look at Sustainable Development Goal No. 11, which focuses on sustainable cities and communities: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Many cities and urban areas around the globe already…

How Your Community Can Empower Sustainable Tourism
SARS-CoV-2 and the resulting global lockdown and the travel restrictions are a massive shock to the tourism industry in every nation. It is estimated that tourism arrivals could fall by 20%-30% compared to 2019. Tourism is among the industries that are hit the hardest by the global pandemic [1]. But what exactly can be done in these tough times? This question was asked among our community members in Africa and Europe because we all are passionate travellers and explorers, who are now confined to one location. Therefore, we started a video project that showcases our whereabouts with our unique perspective, so together we can break out of our daily routine.…

Goal 13: Climate Action – a Stable Climate for a Healthy Planet
Even before “Fridays for Future” started and moved thousands across the globe to stand up and demand politicians to take action against climate change, researchers proclaimed that the worldwide ecosystem is in great danger. This man-made change will severely influence our daily lives, and it poses a huge threat to human life as we know it. But what exactly are the effects of climate change? According to the researchers, humanity has to face: Rising temperatures (1) More droughts and heat waves (2) Rising sea levels due to melting ice sheets and glaciers (3) Loss of landmass and livelihoods (4) Negative impacts on food and freshwater security (4) Negative impacts on…

Is your company a corporate citizen?
Our world is getting more and more complex and globally we face different challenges which need new ways of thinking and acting. Corporate citizenship describes an approach for companies to be a “good citizen”, if they engage and give back to society and the environment [1]. How is this approach connected to the SDGs? Let’s have a closer look at our society, because especially millennials put a lot of pressure on companies. 81% of the millennials have a high awareness about the SDGs and they expect the private sector to commit to them. [2] But why should businesses care for the SDGs? ‘The Sustainable Development Goals are fundamental cornerstones to…
